Encaustics are an ancient form of painting which use beeswax as the color's medium. I've liked using encaustic to collage small objects, paper, and fabric into paintings. It's a visceral process-- warm, steamy, and it smells like honey.
The jackball is a tradition of Southern Hoodoo. Small parcels, are created (usually by women) as talismans to direct and control the actions of others. I grew up in close proximity to hoodoo practices, and they've always interested me and often informed my art. The jackballs in the collection below incorporate found objects with paint and encaustic to explore womanhood.
